its not great but its not bad either. VoR is fine, lose energy burn for power drain, and pain inverter for drain enchantment and Ether Sig for Power Spike (one of my personal favorite skills), Cry of Frustration, or Res Sig. If you are just pugging, stick with backfire, but if not, replace it with some other skill - perhaps from your secondary...

There are better builds, but this one is certainly above average.

The only skill that you lack is a res possibly hard res in pve Mesmers are often referred to as resmers.

I'd replace Ether sig for Glyph of Lesser energy and maybe drop Energy burn for Arcane echo.

Illusionsigging summons has become a lot less attractive with the recent change to PvE skills at lower ranks. Rank 5 or even 6 is easy enough to get, giving a summons level of 17 or 18 - for the cost of two or three levels on the summons, I can get my elite slot back and I don't need to wear a superior rune. Throw in Assassin's Promise and a decent spiking ability, and I can get a small swarm of assassins running around.
The illusionsig does still have its advantages for using multiple lines, but you're still giving up your elite and having to stop from your other activities to renew the signet every three spells. Generally, I'd prefer to have the various skills spread out among multiple characters - for instance, the build you mention could be replaced by two elementalists, one with water snares and one with AoEDoT skills, with the rest of their bars loaded with other utility skills. In a team build, the illusionsig - and the Elementalist counterpart Master of Magic - allow you to compress roles into a single character, but unless your team really is that tight for space, you're probably better splitting them up.
Regarding Backfire and interrupts - different tools for different needs. Even if you're relying on Backfire to punish spamming, it's often useful to have an interrupt you can throw if you see something nasty being cast - there are few things more frustrating than seeing some long-cast spell coming and knowing there's nothing you can do about it. CoF is particularly good for this because it'll disrupt the foe's allies as collateral - and chances are they aren't Backfired.

i've probably posted in here already but i just saw the thread again.
@OP: i prefer mesmers that prevent players from doing things over ones that damage them for doing things. if i want to damage enemies i'll bring a warrior.

I find the hypocrisy very amusing BTW.
Completely 100% agreed with draxynnic - if I were going to try and run a gimmick I would take Arcane Echo + Echo + the EV Assassin over SoI any day, and that's not even a great gimmick.
OP: your build isn't great but if you're enjoying yourself that's what's important. I like faraaz's general idea as far as a better build goes.

1 ele skill= nuker??
In re to op, i presume h/h team and not 'theme team' ie:cryway etc.
As far as SoI EVA gimmick? I'd rather the max lvl then several below and prefer not to grind rank.
Mesmers appeal to me is the versatility, hence SoI as tops for that.

Visions of Regret, Echo, Assassin's Promise, Glyph of Renewal, Hex Eater Vortex and Mantra of Recovery are all much better elites to use. Signet of Illusions is a weak skill that only sees use in builds that carry out at least 5 different attributes, and even then it's an incredibly gimmicky skill weaker than all of the above. The power of PvE skills has been changed so it's more favourable compared to pre-change PvE skills, so you don't need to grind as much to get a certain point which also makes it even less effective.
